You created an Organisational Unit in Active Directory Users and Computers. In a real Windows Server domain, this would let an administrator organise directory objects and apply management settings more precisely.

  • User accounts can be grouped by class, department or site.
  • Device accounts can be separated for labs, offices or shared areas.
  • Security groups can be stored near the users or devices they control.
  • Distribution lists can be organised so communication groups are easier to find and manage.
  • Group Policy can be linked to OUs to apply rules such as password, desktop, software and security settings.
