week 3

Assesment Time - We will now go through the assignment brief to ensure that you understand what is expected and required of you.

1. What sort of features would appeal to a target audience of students of your own age studying at school?
2. What different features would you choose to appeal to male as opposed to female students?
3. How would this affect the style of the site?
4. You might find it helpful to discuss this in small groups of male and female students.

Applying style

When creating webpage's and websites, the visual style is something that can make or break whether a user stays on the site or navigates away. We know from our research before sites like Lings Car's, can overwhelm users and can distract users away from content.
Most websites on the internet use "stylesheets" to make the content of their look nice. Stylesheets allow developers to position text in locations on a page, change the colour of text and text areas, all in an effort to make a consistently looking web page and site.

Types of Website & Improving User Experiance

Types of websites:

  1. static
  2. dynamic.

Static

Static websites are a collection of web pages primarily coded in HyperText Markup Language (HTML). These types of websites present static information to their audience, e.g. a brochure.

In the initial early days of the internet, websites were only text these sites remained the same and were only changed when a user downloaded and then re-uploaded the files with the required improvements.
The First web page
There are still a large number of websites on the internet that are static, as the content in them doesn't require them to be interactive.

Dynamic

A dynamic website is a collection of web pages that often changes or customises itself frequently and automatically.
Sites that use interactivity can be banks, where users can look at the amount of money that they have in thier account, they can then pay people, transfer money between accounts and download bank statements from a time period that they would like to see.

Discuss how can user experience of websites be improved with interactivity?

In groups of no large than 3 create a list of dynamic and static websites (minimum of 5 for each), review these for there intended aim, target audience and purpose and finally explain what your thoughts on these sites are, in terms of visual appearance and functionality.

Different features of websites can improve the user experience for an individual, business or organisation, e.g.:

  1. forms that allow customers to leave feedback
  2. dynamic interactions when socialising online
  3. applying style sheets to keep the same look and feel for a website
  4. making websites interactive by embedding digital assets.

1. How many websites are there now on the internet?
2. What is 'cloud' concept?
3. What types of websites are there?
