Week 4

Place a can of coke on the table in front of the class
Write your command words on the board (it may be useful to put in brackets next to the command words which are normally associated with Pass/Merit/Distinction criteria, for example "describe" (Pass)
Explain to the students how important it is for them to understand what is being asked of them in order for them to achieve the higher grades
BEGIN ACTIVITY:
Work your way through the command words and ask the students apply them one by one to the can of coke, for example:
- IDENTIFY – "this is a can of coke"
- DESCRIBE – "the can of coke is cylindrical, mostly red with white writing and has an opening at the top"
- EXPLAIN – "the can of coke is cylindrical because it makes it easy to hold when drinking, the red background and white writing catches your eye and is simple and memorable, the opening at the top doesn’t come away so there’s no rubbish created and is just big enough to drink from......"
- COMPARE AND CONTRAST – (using another can for example ‘Lilt’) “both cans are cylindrical and hold the same amount of liquid, they have identical openings at the top and are made from aluminium, they also both have nutritional information printed on them. However, the cans are different colours and the drinks inside have different names, despite both having nutritional information this information varies in terms of the amount of calories etc...”
- ANALYSE – "coke was introduced in America and is a brand of cola drink; it was originally produced as a medicine at the end of the 19th century and was then produced as a soft drink. Coke cans like this one were introduced in 1955 alongside bottles and were considered to be easier to dispose of and cheaper to produce maximising profits for the company. The impact of Coke has been far reaching, the distinctive colouring and labelling has been marketed effectively and the brand has spread throughout the world making it an iconic product sold in over 200 countries. The knock on effects of this popularity have led the brand to expand their provision of coke products, for example you can now buy Diet Coke, Cherry Coke, Coke Zero and Coke Lemon amongst others. The company have also bought out many other soft drink brands for example Fanta and have dominated the soft drink industry for over 100 years..." For analysis no judgement or conclusion is necessary
- EVALUATE – (the can of coke would be broken down and analysed as above but for evaluation an outcome or expected conclusion must be included which considers different views/ considers advantages and disadvantages/ is justified.) "In conclusion this can of coke represents a huge success story in terms of 20th century entrepreneurial adventure, developments in marketing and advertising and the globalisation of capitalism and American brands. Many people dislike the dominance of such companies and see their buying out of other brands as the monopolisation of the soft drinks industry which impacts upon choice, competitiveness and ultimately quality. However the continued success of Coke as a brand around the world proves that it has established its place in the hearts of millions of people and justifies its famous tagline "Always Coca-cola".
Do this together and then to check understanding place a different object on each table and ask the students in groups to repeat the exercise with their new object.
