Week 11

Paper A

Scenario

In all of the papers a context/scenario will be provided, this has further important points that link to the structure and rules of data that will be required to be applied within the database.

The image below is an extract from a paper where key points have been highlighted

The information may be useful towards identifying the use of linking keys called "Foriegn Keys" that are "Primary Keys" taken from another table. This information will support the effective creation of the relationships and rulls that are applied within the database.

The Dataset

In the paper we will be given a dataset. This contains all the information that will be required to construct and create the required tables in the database. The dataset will show the field names and the content that falls under them.

This is classed as UNNORMALISED, whereby the data is in a single table with a number of duplicated and redundant records and data. At this stage of the exam it is recommended that you use a pencil/pen to draw out the content/tables to remove duplication. This process is called normalisation and can go through a number of stages that are;

1NF (First Normalised Form)

2NF (Second Normalised Form)

3NF (Third Normalised Form)

4NF (Forth Normalised Form)

In this unit exam you will not need to use 4th Normailised Form

5NF (Fifth Normalised Form)

In this unit exam you will not need to use 5th Normailised Form

Once the tables have been normalised and the allocation of primary, foriegn and if needed composite keys have been assigned it is time to move on to the creation of the structure and tables inside of the Microsoft Access program. Form hear we will be able to generate our first piece of evidence.

Lets try this out
Using the provided worksheet, work though the examples and attempt to make the 4 tables that is expected to be created to include the primary and foriegn keys.
